Spurs Dismantled by Warriors in Game 2 of Conference Finals

Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs were dismantled by the Golden State Warriors, 136-100 in game 2 of the Western Conference Finals, Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

The Spurs came into the game without their star guard Kawhi Leonard, who re-injured his knee in the previous game. His absence was palpable right off the bat.

The first period was marked by the Golden State’s excellent offense and San Antonio’s poor shooting. The Warriors shot well, especially from beyond the 3-point arc. The Spurs were a step behind on defense and the quarter finished trailing 33-16.

The second quarter was almost a repeat of the first. The Spurs seemed much slower compared to the home-court Warriors. The basket appeared to be a teacup for the Spurs and a 55-gallon drum for the Warriors. During one stretch, San Antonio made only 2 of 17 field goals, while Golden State was shooting 67 percent from the field. The Warriors finished the first half leading 72-44.

The Spurs came out of halftime looking more determined, but the Warriors were ready for them. San Antonio’s head coach, Greg Popovich, tried every combination of players to put a dent into the lead. At one point, he had three rookies on the floor for the Spurs. It was to no avail, as the Warriors extended their lead and finished the third ahead by 31 points; 106-75.

Most of the final period featured substitutes in the game for both teams. The Warriors dominance continued in the fourth. The end result was academic, as Golden State cruised to the win.

The Spurs high-scorer was Jonathan Simmons, with a career-high 22 points. The Warriors were led by superstar Stephan Curry with 29 points. Golden State is now 10-0 in the playoffs.

The Warriors will take a 2-0 lead into the next game. They will meet the Spurs again on Saturday, May 20, in San Antonio.
