Grammys 2016: Taylor Swift wins album of the year

Swift, who won in categories like Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Music Video, also sent out a message to young women singers in the industry.

(In his remarks to accept his Rap Album of the Year Award, Lamar shouted out Snoop Dogg and Nas, who’ve been nominated a couple dozen times but never won a single Grammy.) This year, Lamar roundly bested Kanye West, Dr. Dre, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Big Sean, and J. Cole for a handful of awards, including Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, and Rap Album of the Year.

While picking up the gong for “Album of the Year“, Taylor noted that she is the only woman to have ever won the award twice and urged young women to “focus on work” and ignore people who try to “or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame“.

A song on West’s new album The Life Of Pablo includes lyrics that claim he propelled “that b***h” Swift to fame.

Taylor Swift, wearing a bejewelled bodysuit with her hair in a short bob, kicked off the Grammy awards with her latest hit song Out of the Woods on a foggy stage decorated with sparse trees. “I made [her] famous“. Ouch, you were sort of asking for it, Kanye!

Her performance was plagued by some sound issues early on, but she remained unfazed and ended it with a tribute to Lamar, shouting: “I love you Kendrick, you’re awesome”.

Lady Gaga, meanwhile, performed a theatrical medley of hits by David Bowie, who died January 10.

The singer bagged two awards this Grammys.

The top awards were split between three acts, with Record of the Year going to Uptown Funk, Mark Ronson’s collaboration with singer Bruno Mars, and Song of the Year awarded to Ed Sheeran for Thinking Out Loud. Winners and performers are exposed to millions of new fans who purchase albums, stream music on Spotify and buy concert tickets.

The show also took home the award for Best Musical Theater Album. If he wins, he’ll be only the third hip-hop artist to do so in that category.

Members of Taylor’s “squad” including Selena Gomez, Jaime King, Serayah McNeill and Hailee Steinfeld congratulated her three Grammy wins online, while footage from the ceremony shows Selena looking at the camera and mouthing, “That’s my best friend”, while Taylor is onstage.

RB singer The Weeknd performed his infectious and wildly popular song, “I Can’t Feel My Face“, while Southern rock band Alabama Shakes delivered a song from their new album, “Sound Color”. A fire burned behind him as he rapped “Alright”, and a backdrop included a map of Africa with the California city “Compton” written on it.

Collaborative performances was the theme of the Grammys: Carrie Underwood sang with Sam Hunt; Ellie Goulding and Andra Day performed; and while Demi Lovato – who shined brightly – John Legend, Luke Bryan and Tyrese sang with Lionel Richie to honour the icon.

“Thank you to the Grammys, I love you so much”, said a teary-eyed Trainor, who also thanked her parents and Epic Records CEO L.A. Reid.
